What is domain forwarding or redirection and URL forwarding?

Domain redirection, also called Domain forwarding, is a technique of redirecting a domain name to another website. When a web browser attempts to open a domain that has been redirected, a page with a different domain is opened. Domain redirection or Domain forwarding is when all pages in a domain are redirected to a different domain.

Similarly, URL redirection or URL forwarding is for making a web page available under more than one URL address. When a web browser attempts to open a URL that has been redirected, a page with a different URL is opened.

URL redirection is done for various reasons: for URL shortening; to prevent broken links when web pages are moved; to allow multiple domain names belonging to the same owner to refer to a single web site; for guide navigation into and out of a website; for privacy protection; and finally for less innocuous purposes such as phishing attacks.

Domain Forwarding with masking is a special type of redirect which can be used when you want to point your domain to another domain / URL but still have your domain name in the browser address bar. Masking prevents visitors from seeing your domain name forwarding by keeping your domain name in the Web browser’s address bar. Also you have the option to set custom title, description and keyword tags by inputting the required info in the relevant boxes provided.

Note on domain / url redirect status codes:

  • 301 redirects: A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect from one domain / URL to the other.
  • 302 redirect: A 302 redirect means that the move is only temporary.
  • 303 redirect: A 303 Redirect is a “see other” redirect status indicating that the resource has been replaced.
